When you settle on a strapless bra that’s ill-fitting or poorly constructed, you could end up pulling up our bra all night long or suffering from boning cutting into your sides. When you do find the right one, though — it’s a godsend, offering a smooth, stunning silhouette and the perfect amount of support under all your strapless ensembles.

An ultra-secure band

First thing’s first: A traditional bra has straps to lend support. In a strapless bra, however, the band plays a crucial role, as it’s doing the majority of that work. For a blend of both support and shaping, look for a strapless contour bra that has a sturdy, specially-engineered band. (Side note: strapless bras with molded cups offer a little more structure and definition, which can be helpful if you’re wearing a dress or top that’s very form-fitting and want to achieve a super smooth, rounded shape). The band should feel rather snug without compromising comfort — a good test is to make sure you can’t slide more than a finger or two beneath the band.

Removable straps

Some strapless bras also include a set of straps that can be hooked on in a variety of ways. Since you likely want to get as much wear as possible out of your bra, this is an ideal feature to look for. With these removable straps, you can make it work for tricky halter, criss-cross, and one-shoulder garments, as well as wear it with no straps or as a traditional bra. Talk about versatility!

Adjustable closure

As previously noted, the band is providing the majority of the support in a strapless bra — so a one-size-fits-all band with no adjustable closures simply isn’t going to cut it for most of us (especially larger busted ladies). Look for a bra that also has at least three rows of hook-and-eye closures on the back of the band. You should be able to comfortably wear it on the loosest or middle hook — that way, as the elastic stretches slightly, you can fasten it on a tighter set of hooks.

Anti-slip silicone

Slippage is perhaps one of the main issues we face when it comes to strapless bras. If you don’t want to stress about constantly tugging your bra up, consider looking for one with anti-slip silicone tape within the band and/or the sides or cups. Better yet, opt for an underwire strapless bra with silicone tape, which will lend maximum lift and support. The silicone tape helps the bra to adhere your skin, so it stays in place for hours.

A longline bra or strapless bustier style

Full-busted women, listen up: You’ll be amazed at what just a few extra inches of fabric can do. A longline bra, which extends farther down your torso, typically features boning for some extra support. As an added benefit, that extra material and boning also provides shaping for a smoother silhouette (something you’re bound to appreciate under a body-hugging dress). Look for a strapless longline bra with boning throughout, lined cups, and wide elastic at the bottom for the ideal combination of definition and support while staying put the whole time you’re wearing it. If you’re seeking even more shaping power, a wire bustier with foam-lined cups is ultra secure and supportive as well and can do wonders for smoothing out your torso.
